revolutionary girl » appearance

Appearance is never that important in terms of a character, especially not in respect of your enjoyment of him/her. Moreover, Fullmetal Alchemist is not a series where physical features are an advantage or a handicap. Arakawa has a very particular drawing style, which infuses charisma into every member of the cast. It's not something that distracts from the overall product, though, but rather adds to it.

Still, it's nice to take a moment to analyse the more shallow characteristics of someone (especially if they're two dimensional). It's especially entertaining to do so with Hawkeye, not so much because of her looks, but rather because of the change she has experienced through the years.

There's no doubt Hawkeye is a beautiful young woman. Despite the certain roughness that surrounds her, her facial features are delicate and bright. She's got fair skin and brown eyes, but perhaps her most striking feature is her blond hair. Or rather, the way she's styled it as time went by.

As a young girl, she used to sport a clean short haircut, which stayed with her during the Ishval war and for a couple of years after. After meeting Winry Rockbell in Resembool, she decides to let her hair grow long. There's no big meaning behind this action according to her, but I believe it's very telling of her new situation and her new-found purpose. A change in appearance reflecting a change in her life. Once her hair is long enough and "it starts to get in the way", she starts tying it up with a simple functional hair slide.

Of course, of relevance is also the tattoo on her back, its presence unknown by most, but which adds greatly to who Hawkeye was and is nowadays.

Being a First Lieutenant within the military, we mostly see Hawkeye wearing her uniform. Since she's also a field soldier (in part), she wears the issued trousers (unless she needs her gala uniform, with a long skirt) and her choice black tight t-shirt underneath the jacket. She tends to wear a similar civil outfit while working undercover and can also be seen wearing a long black coat.

When off duty, Hawkeye seems to enjoy wearing long skirts combined with high boots and a simple top and jacket combination. She also lets her hair loose sometimes. A pretty classy look.
