relationships » comrades
In Hawkeye's case, her closest comrades are also her
closest friends. Leading a life so centered around her work, she's had no choice but to find them either at the office or the training field.
The small and cosy group selected by Roy after the Ishval War ended —
Second Lieutenant Jean Havoc, Second Lieutenant Heymans Breda, Sergeant Major Kain Fuery and Warrant Officer Vato Falman — is basically the core of Hawkeye's group of friends. They spend together all working hours, all working days, and then some more. After so many years it's no wonder they developed a strong bond, full of trust and respect in one another.
Although in the beginning Hawkeye was still a bit of a mystery for her closest comrades — so apparently no-nonsense and professional to a fault — as the years went by and she relaxed around them, they started be more aware of
the Hawkeye behind Hawkeye.
Although we don't get to see that many moments between the Lieutenant and any of Roy's men on their own, you can tell they all get along well.
Fuery is the youngest of them all and at first the one more wary of getting on Hawkeye's wrong side. When he finds an abandoned puppy under the rain and he himself unable to keep him, Roy suggests asking Hawkeye. Though unsure at first, she ends up accepting. She names him
Black Hayate.
Hawkeye and
Falman are a bit similar in some ways. Both smart individuals, they're also quiet and tend to keep calm around. Falman is quite a bit on the loser side, but he's loyal and extremely brave regardless.
Havoc and Breda were already best friends before joining Roy's team. Both of them extremely talented, they're also perhaps the most jokey and casual of the group. Which doesn't mean they're not professional when they need to be.
Hawkeye's oldest (and only) female friend is
Rebecca Catalina. It's presumed they met after the war, at East City Headquarters, although it's also possible it was at the Military Academy. Rebecca is lively, warm and outspoken. No matter how easy-going she looks like, she's hard-working and won't hesitate to lend a helping hand.
Rebecca: Uhm... jumping from Colonel Mustang to the Fuhrer... How exactly are you tricking people into promoting you like this, Lieutenant Riza Hawkeye?
Hawkeye: I'll thank you not to imply I didn't earn them, Lieutenant Rebecca Catalina. [v20 ch084]
Hawkeye and Rebecca seem to share a really honest relationship, often winding each other up and making jokes about the other's situation. Although Rebecca is not particularly fond of the military either and would retire if she could, she involves herself in the rebellion the Mustang Team is planning anyway. She's one valuable ally.
Black Hayate is Hawkeye's much loved dog. Fuery found him as a puppy alone under the rain, and Hawkeye was finally the one who took him home. Despite being a strict owner, Hayate quickly grows used to her. Nowadays he's a great asset to the team, being able to sniff out enemies and protect his human comrades to the best of his ability. After Fuery suggests he should have a rank, Roy declares him a
second lieutenant (just as Havoc and Breda).
Hawkeye cares deeply about her dog, bringing him to nearly everywhere she goes, especially missions. Roy and the rest don't seem to care in the slightest, they also enjoy the dog's company. Well, maybe not Breda.
