relationships » her family
Not much is known for certain about Hawkeye's family. Her mother died when she was young, and both his parents had been estranged from their respective families since long before that.
Her father,
Professor Hawkeye, was an alchemist, an incredibly talented one at that. His area of expertise seemed to be
fire manipulation through the concentration of oxygen, and his research consisted in perfecting that technique. He accepted Roy Mustang as his apprentice, but was reluctant to pass on all his knowledge to him. In the end, he died prematurely due to sickness and left that decision in the hands of his young daughter.
Hawkeye: I was... afraid of my father. Because the sight of him absorved in his research was as if he were possessed by something. [v15 ch059]
Even less is known about Hawkeye's relationship with her father. Professor Hawkeye looked like a man
consumed by his work, but whether he had always been like that is left up to speculation. I think it's safe to assume, though, that he changed through the course of the years, perhaps starting when his wife died.
In any case, Hawkeye was quite scarred by his father — both metaphorical and literally. She's left not only with the responsibility of judging whether Roy could be trusted with that immense power, but also with his secret research carved on her back's skin in the form of a code. One has to wonder,
what kind of a father does that?
Her only known living relative is
Lieutenant General Grumman. Although not directly addressed in the manga, the
Perfect Guidebook 2 explains how he's her grandfather from her mother's side — thus the different surnames.
Grumman is a respected, excentric and joyful official stationed in
East City Headquarters, and a direct superior to Roy Mustang. Although he's never seen interacting with his grandaughter, it's obvious the man holds deep affection for both she and Roy. Even to the point of suggesting for Roy to ask for his grandaughter's hand for marriage.
Even after moving to Central City, Grumman continues to support them in any way he can. Going as far as to directly participate in the revolution that's to take place in Amestris.
