For starters, I'd never dare to cheapen Roy & Hawkeye's relationship by saying it was destiny or that they were fated. Those descriptions always sound cliche and easy to me. However, considering how they were brought together, and far more importantly, how they stayed together, I can't help but think about the irony and luck of it all. Of course, luck and coincidences are also very valid accomplishments for a relationship.
Still, what makes their relationship so amazing to me is the fact that what makes it float, above everything else, is their sheer will to be together. It's interesting and touching to see two people getting together, yes, but what makes something really special is growth. Going through everything together, whether it's bad or good, and still manage to be together -- to want to be together -- that's what makes a bond grow stronger till it's unbreakable.
Hawkeye's father was a very talented alchemist -- I'd say that's where it all started. Young Roy Mustang wanted to learn alchemy, something which he believed could bring people happiness -- and he found a teacher in the brilliant, albeit obsessed, Professor Hawkeye. He, in return, believed that Roy was the man in whom he could rely his knowledge, as powerful as it is dangerous should it fall in the wrong hands. Add his daughter, Riza Hawkeye, to the equation -- with the only remain of that knowledge carved in her skin, once his father passed away.
Roy & Hawkeye's story is one that's difficult to explain with words. Two young idealist people meeting, not very scarred by life yet, sharing their dreams and hopes for the future with the other. Colliding by chance (or not really) years later in the middle of a massacre, almost two different persons already, lost, confused but still determined to go on -- together. Trying to reach happiness , not really for themselves but for everyone, while sacrificing a normal life for it.
It's a story of growth, of wanting to change the world and be willing to, not only try, but dedicate your whole life to it. It's a story of love (of whatever kind you choose to see it) overcoming all obstacles, of devotion and faith in placing all your hopes and trust in one single person.
