A little time reading Fullmetal Alchemist will make you realize that what you have in front of you is not your usual shounen manga. For starters, the magazine it's published in, Monthly Shounen Gangan, is a bit less mainstream than others, allowing certain liberties plus a monthly 40-pages schedule, things that play an important part in making this manga what it is.
Not only that, but you'll find too many people bordering the thirties in the cast, a higher rate of braincells than it's recommended for any shounen manga and more realistic characters and reactions than it's recommended for any manga overall. This and lots of other pecularities more, are the things that shape my favorite series ever.
