The Elric brothers and Major Armstrong arrive at Resembool, where they are greeted by Winry and her grandmother Pinako, at the Rockbell household. Winry is the brothers' neighbour and childhood friend, who lost both her doctor parents at the Ishval War. She also happens to be Edward's automail mechanic, a job she takes very seriously and with great pride. Despite having burnt down their own house when they left Resembool, the brothers will always have a home --a family-- to return to.

Ed and Al arrive at Central City, where they meet up with 2nd Lieut. Maria Ross and Sergeant Denny Brosh, who are to be their new escorts. However, when they arrive to the first branch of the National Central Library (the place Marcoh told them his research was hidden) they find it burnt to ashes. Fortunately, they're able to recover the doctor's texts with the help of Sheska, a library worker with the ability of remembering every book she reads. After spending days and days decoding it, the brothers finally do it, but the truth they find there is something as unexpected as horrifying.

Ed and Al think they've reached yet another dead end, when they find out the Philosopher's Stone is made with living human beings as raw materials, according to Marcoh's research. However, believing there's still another "truth" behind it all, they break into the suspicious 5th Laboratory, despite Armstrong telling them not to. There, they encounter no. 48 and no. 66, two of those military experiments. Meanwhile, Scar disappears from East City after an encounter with Gluttony.

Just as Alphonse is fighting no. 66 (who's actually the serial killer Barry the Chopper) outside the Laboratory, Edward faces no. 48 inside of it. Ed ends up getting beaten up by the armor, which in fact contains two brothers' souls bound to it, but somehow manages to survive and win. When he refuses to finish up no. 48, he agrees to tell him everything he knows about the makers of the Stone. However, it's precisely at that time when Lust and Envy arrive, meeting Edward at last.
