Edward, Alphonse and Winry arrive to Rush Valley, the Holy Land of Automail as it's called. Almost straight away, Ed's own automail catches the attention of the local technicians, much to Winry's pride. However, during the commotion, Edward's National Alchemist Silver Watch gets stolen. The perpetrator is a young girl called Paninya, whose both legs are automail too and who is also a lot harder to catch than it looks.

    Paninya offers Ed, Al and Winry a deal to show them the way to her automail technician's residence in exchange for forgetting about the robbery stuff. They agree (Winry at least agrees) and so they travel through the mountains till they finally get to the house. There lives Dominic (Paninya's automail maker), his son Riddle and his wife Satella, who is 8 months and a half pregnant. But no matter how much Winry begs to Dominic to let her be his apprentice, he won't cave in. However, Satella suddenly goes into labor and while Dominic goes to look for a doctor, it's Winry the one who must handle the situation.

    Everyone relies their trust on Winry to handle Satella's delivery, as she was brought up by a couple of doctors. Despite the circumstances, the baby is born healthy and without further complications. Once the situation has calmed down, Winry tells Edward she's seen what's inside his watch -- the date the brothers burnt their house engraved in it. She's decided to ask Dominic to be his apprentice once again for the sake of Edward and Alphonse. He still doesn't accept, but upon hearing the name "Pinako Rockbell" he agrees to recommend a teacher. FInally, Winry decides to stay in Rush Valley to go on with her learning and the brothers take the train to Dublith.

    Edward and Alphonse meet up with their alchemy teacher, Izumi Curtis, and ask her about the Philosopher's Stone. Unfortunately, she knows nothing... except for having met a man seemingly interested in the Stone named Hohenheim (Ed and Al's father) during her travels. Izumi soons notices the changes her apprentices have gone through -- Ed is missing two limbs, can perform alchemy without the need of a transmutation array and joined the military, Al's suit of armor is empty -- and demands an explanation.

    Edward and Alphonse tell the story of how they reached their current situation. After their mother's death, the brothers decided to apply their little alchemic knowledge to bring her back from the dead, no matter if human transmutation was taboo. However, they weren't improving on their own, so when Izumi arrived by chance to Resembool they decided to ask her to become their teacher. Though reluctant at first, she finally accepted and took them to Dublith, oblivious to the brothers' true objective for learning alchemy. For starters, the brothers would be thrown onto a deserted little island to see if they could survive for a month, while at the same time solve a riddle -- "One is all, all is one".
