Little Edward and Alphonse are to spend a whole month alone in a little island if they want Izumi to teach them alchemy. The soon find out it's gonna be a lot tougher than they expected, especially when a strange man/creature chases after them and obtaining food gets harder as their bodies grow weaker each day. Plus, how is this hellish training related to alchemy?

However, Edward would soon find out what is this "true knowledge"... once their attempt goes terribly wrong and the price for their mistake is higher than they can afford.

Lieutenant Colonel Roy Mustang and Second Lieutenant Riza Hawkeye arrive to Resembool in search for two potential young alchemists. However, due to some incorrect information, they're unaware that they're only kids. Still, they decide to pay them a visit... and are instantly horrified by what they find. After their failed attempt at human transmutation, Edward has lost an arm and a leg and Alphonse his entire body, and his soul now resides inside an empty suit of armor. Roy then offers Edward a possibility: to become a National Alchemist and use the military resources to look for a way to regain their bodies.

Izumi comforts both Edward and Alphonse after listening to their story. They, after being told to leave, hear about their teacher trying to transmute her unborn baby. Once they realize they don't need to leave (just stop talking to Izumi like their teacher), the boys go back and decide to stay until they're somehow closer to their goal. Meanwhile, Roy gets a transfer from East City to Central. He'll be requesting all his subordinates to join him, of course. At the same time, a homunculus by the name of Greed makes his first move in Dublith.
