I admit that, despite thinking that the Fullmetal Alchemist plot is one of the best I've ever seen and everything a fan could want, it's not the main reason why I find myself so attached to this manga. It's characters and the relationships between them what really entrances me and makes me addicted to knowing more, to try and grasp a better understanding of them.
That said, Roy being at the middle of it all, he interacts with a good number of characters (and will probably meet more of them along the way), something that says so much about him as his own personality. After all, maybe it's our way of behaving towards people and other people's reactions to us that make us who we are (and yes, I just kind of quoted The X-Files).
