HIS LOOKS | go back

As hard to believe as it may seem... I couldn't care less about Roy's looks. I mean, compared to all his amazing and wonderful personality characteristics and everything that really makes Roy Mustang what he is... I really wouldn't mind if he was actually a green ferret or something.

That aside, I think Roy Mustang is the most beautiful man ever. That is, if he was a real person. Since he isn't, let's just say that for me he's the most attractive character design to ever graze a manga. Now I'll try my best not to fill this page of squealing and incoherent fangirl babbling.

The curious thing is, Roy's design is probably the simplest my eyes have ever seen. Think about it, medium complexity, not very tall, not very short and he's not very thin or fat either. He's got short straight black hair and oriental-shaped black eyes. He's probably the most oriental-looking character from the whole series (except for maybe Ling, Lan Fan and the rest of people from Xing), but I couldn't say if that's Arakawa trying to tell us something or not.

Before I continue... yes, black eyes. Because that's what Arakawa uses to color Roy's eyes. Black is not an eye color? Well, neither is golden (hello, Edward). I don't care that if you take some given screencap out of BONES' anime and increase its contrast in 364% they show up dark blue or orange. His eyes are as black as #000000 in my Photoshop pallete. Maybe more.

Like a good number of other characters in FMA and because it's one of the peculiarities about Arakawa's wonderful art style, Roy's got a fairly round face. This gives him kind of a boyish aspect to him, especially if he's also being dorkish at the time. A strange thing is how, depending on the circumstances, Roy gives a younger or older appearance to the readers.

It often depends on the people who surround him at the moment or the mood he's in. Roy often will seem older interacting with the Elric brothers (except if he's interacting with them boyishly), while he'll look younger than usual if talking with elder superiors. Moreover, Roy also has a 8 year old boy inside him that comes out in the form of dorkiness or weird behaviour, he'll also look younger then. Overwork or exhaustion will have the opposite effect.

Roy's also rather fair-skinned, something which contrasts with his dark hair and eyes, and gives him an elegant and, if I may say it for the nth time, beautiful aura. He's definitively not a skinny man, although he's not buff either. Just the right amount of muscle, I'd say. Just look at those arms. Ok, I can sense I'm fangirling now.

Most of the time, we see Roy dressed in his military outfit (a genius design, in my opinion), which is predominantly blue as everyone knows. When he goes out, he usually likes to wear his black coat over the uniform or just cover his shoulders with it. And he's got the style to do it, too.

We haven't seen Roy wearing civil clothes lots of times, but when he does we can see he prefers simple clothes, which are usually black trousers, black shoes, white shirt and black jacket over it. He also carries his shoulder holster for security reasons. Oh, and don't forget he's the sole inventor of wearing his white shirt opened over his hospital gown. Which is probably the most awesome idea ever.
